Jolt to Congress: Maharashtra LoP’s son, Sujay Vikhe Patil, joins BJP; thanks PM Modi, Amit Shah

The development comes after NCP chief Sharad Pawar, whose party is in alliance with the Congress in the state, rejected Sujay Vikhe Patil’s request to contest the polls from Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat.

Mumbai: In a major embarrassment for the Congress, Sujay Vikhe Patil, son of the leader of opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, in the presence of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai. Reportedly, the development comes after NCP chief Sharad Pawar, whose party is in alliance with the Congress in the state, rejected Sujay’s request to contest the polls from Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat.

After joining the party, Sujay lauded PM Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah for their leadership and also thanked CM Fadnavis for giving him a chance to serve the BJP. He said that youth and women support his decision to join the BJP. He added that the decision to leave Congress had been difficult as his family has been associated with the party for a long time.

“I am impressed with PM Modi’s leadership. We can count on BJP,” Sujay said while addressing reporters after joining BJP. He said, “I’ve taken this decision against my father’s wishes. I don’t know how much my parents will support this decision, but I’ll try my best to make my family proud by working under the guidance of BJP. CM and other BJP MLAs were supportive and helped me take the decision.”

While speaking at the press conference, CM Fadnavis welcomed Sujay and said that he was happy “a young and educated leader was joining the BJP.”  He also stated that he would be proposing Sujay’s name for MP candidature to the BJP’s Central Parliamentary Board and was “confident” that it will be “approved.”

The Maharashtra CM said, “Sujay Vikhe Patil’s name has been forwarded by state unit to Central Parliamentary board for Lok Sabha candidature and we are sure that the recommended name will be accepted by the Central Parliamentary board.”  He further said, “PM Modi’s leadership and how he led with his development schemes have benefitted one and all. PM Modi PM Modi has shown India is mighty power and not a weak country. We have shown our enemies what we are capable of. The youth of this country feels that this country is in safe hands now, in the hands of PM Modi. Sujay Vikhe Patil has also realised this.”

Sources suggested that Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil could probably resign from his post by evening, though he remained unavailable for comment throughout the day.  Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, is said to have met Pawar multiple times over the last few days regarding his request, news agency PTI reported.

“Ahmednagar seat was always our seat, there was no point in giving that seat to anyone else. If you look back, NCP even defeated late Balasaheb Vikhe Patil from there and I personally had to face legal case in court from Vikhe

Patil following that. Joining our party was an open option but at no point of time that seat could have been taken away from NCP,” Pawar said, as per the news agency.

Meanwhile, sources said that the BJP was trying hard to persuade both the Vikhe Patil father-son duo to join the party, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

On the other hand, in more troubling news for the Congress, even as party president Rahul Gandhi chaired the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, four Congress MLAs in Telangana reportedly quit the party.

On Monday, Pawar had announced that he will not be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and had instead decided to launch his grand nephew Parth from Maval constituency.
